The Challenge
Europoort is a port and industrial area of around 3,700 hectares and part of the port of Rotterdam. It is one of the largest petrochemical ports in the world. The local water supplier Evides Industriewater operates various fire extinguishing pipelines made of large PE pipes here. For safety reasons, such pipes must not be interrupted when a branch is created. Evides therefore approached Aliaxis Germany via their colleagues at AKATHERM NL. They were looking for a way to create a branch line d250 to the pressurized main line d710. The industrial fire extinguishing pipe consists of PE d710, PE100 and SDR 13.6 and allows an internal line pressure of approx. 5 bar. The outlet serves as a branch line for further hydrant connections.
The Solution
Aliaxis opts for the FRIALEN SA XL 710/ 250 nozzle clamp with PN10 flange outlet. This is prefabricated in the Aliaxis factory in Mannheim according to customer requirements. The inner bead of the butt fusion seam is removed at the factory to ensure full passage of the drill bit. The vacuum pump including connections and plugs for outlet d250 is purchased from Evides, also with a view to further projects. A 195 mm Huetz & Baumgarten Perfekt-3 drill bit is used for tapping, which enables low-cutting drilling. The length of the drilling rod is 1.6 m.
The project at a glance
- Measure: Connection of flange outlet DN250 to a pressurized fire extinguishing pipe d710
- Construction site: Europoort Rotterdam
- Client: Evides Industriewater
- Construction company: Siers Groep Oldenzaal B.V. Oldenzaal
- Construction site support: Akatherm NL - Aliaxis Germany
- Products: SA XL d710 with DN250 flange outlet, FRIAMAT prime eco with app
The Realisation
After pipe processing and cleaning of the fusion surfaces, the saddle is aligned. The FRIAMAT prime eco fusion unit is used for preheating and fusng. Documentation is simple and practical via the FRIAMAT app. After the cooling time and the pressure test via vacuum, the DN250 gate valve is installed. The tapping equipment was pre-assembled for this and flanged to the gate valve. The actual tapping process takes a maximum of 5 minutes. After the tapping process, the pipe is vented via the tapping device, the drill is pulled upwards into the flange area and the gate valve is closed. The tapping device is then removed. The spherical cap is securely inserted into the drill.
The Conclusion
The FRIALEN SA XL nozzle clamp impresses in conjunction with the new FRIAMAT prime eco. Hot tapping under pressure not only proves to be a problem solver, it is also clearly the most economical method of subsequently creating branches. Close consultation between all parties involved right from the start ensures a smooth process: Which equipment and which fittings are required? As the FRIALEN SA XL nozzle clamp with flange outlet was prefabricated in the Aliaxis factory in Mannheim, the time required on site is significantly reduced. The entire job can be completed within three hours.
