Surface treatment is one of the most important steps in the manufacture of finished metal products

Surface treatment describes common processes to protect surfaces from corrosion or wear or to change their optical and electrical function. There are various types of surface treatment: from chemical processes and mechanical surface treatment to coating and removal of the surface.

Surface treatment is used in various branches of industry - for example for computer and smartphone components, in the automotive sector and in aircraft construction. Metals and plastics are often treated with chemicals as part of the surface treatment process.

Surface treatment: robust pipes for chemicals

Piping systems are subject to special surface treatment requirements - because the chemicals transported attack many materials. Piping systems made of high-quality plastics, on the other hand, are acid-resistant, robust and corrosion-proof. They can be used for the smooth transportation of chemicals for surface treatment. Aliaxis therefore relies on plastic piping systems that retain their characteristic properties such as chemical resistance, insulation and flexibility and are particularly durable and safe.

The most important surface treatment processes:

  • Electroplating: Here, a thin but even layer of a selected material is deposited on the object to be processed. This layer can be applied to both metal and plastic surfaces. The coating is applied electrochemically, using an electric field to transfer the particles to a conductive surface.

  • Galvanization: This is used to protect the processed surface from corrosion. A layer is applied to products made of steel or plastic to provide long-term corrosion protection and abrasion resistance. The most common electroplating process is a hot metal bath, where the object is immersed in molten metal to apply a chemical coating.

  • Pickling lines: The process aims to remove impurities (stains or oxides, e.g. rust) from the surface. It is typically used in steel production.

  • Painting lines: Various technologies are used for surface painting. One important one is electrophoretic coating, in which a metal part is immersed in an watery solution containing a paint emulsion.

The advantages of plastics in surface treatment:

  • Chemical resistance
  • No corrosion
  • Good electrical and thermal insulation properties
  • Simple and safe installation
  • Longer service life and more sustainable
  • Lower installation and maintenance costs
